Second Seminar for Teachers on the Holocaust and Tolerance

On May 20-21, a seminar "Problems of Teaching the Holocaust and Discrimination" was held in Liepāja at the Amrita Hotel.

As part of the project "Remember, So It Doesn't Happen Again," the Jewish religious community "Shamir" is organizing a series of four seminars "Methodology of Research and Teaching of Holocaust and Discrimination Issues" for museum workers, librarians, and teachers of history and other humanities disciplines.

The second seminar was held in Liepāja on May 20-21 at the Amrita Hotel. In the fall of 2008, two more seminars are planned — in Riga and in one of the cities of Vidzeme.

More than 60 participants from the cities of Kurzeme registered for the seminar in Liepāja. Experts such as Professor Aivars Stranga from the University of Latvia, Dace Saleniece from the Ministry of Education of Latvia, Ambassador of Israel to Latvia Hen Ivri, and Ms. Aija Būrija from the Liepāja Regional Museum were invited as experts. As part of the seminar, an evening dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel was held in the Liepāja Jewish community. All libraries that participated in the seminar become participants in the project "50 Information Sets for Regional Libraries of Latvia" and receive a set of more than 30 books about the Holocaust, the history of Jews in Latvia, and discrimination.

The seminar was organized with the support of The Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research, The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, the Secretariat of the Minister for Special Assignments for Public Integration, the Embassy of Israel in Latvia, the open fund "Liepājas ebreju mantojums" and the Liepāja Jewish community.

The project "Remember, So It Doesn't Happen Again" began in 2005. As part of this project, two competitions of children's works on the Holocaust, discrimination and the history of Jews in Latvia were held, in which more than 350 children participated and which ended with exhibitions in Jerusalem and in Riga at the House of the Blackheads, as well as a pilot project "Teaching the Holocaust and Discrimination in Latvian Schools," covering 6 Latvian schools.

In 2008, the project continued with a series of seminars for teachers, librarians and museum workers "Methodology of Research and Teaching of Holocaust and Discrimination Issues," as well as the project "50 Information Sets on the Holocaust and Discrimination for Regional Libraries of Latvia."

The first seminar was held in Daugavpils on April 9-10, 2008 at the Latgola Hotel.

The seminar in Daugavpils on April 9-10, 2008 gathered 67 participants from 16 cities of Latgale, as well as honored guests. As part of the seminar, an evening dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel was held in the Daugavpils Jewish community, and the title of Righteous Among the Nations was awarded by the Ambassador of Israel to a person who saved Jews during World War II.
